Suuuuuueweeeee, here piggy!

By Jaime Cross

The second livestock purchase we made were meat hogs. We bought 3 sows & 3 boars. Such cute lil piglets when we got them, weighing about 20-30 pounds. Not anymore! Right now they weigh around 100lbs each. That’s a lot of bacon!

The first mistake we made was not putting a wooden floor in their first pigsty. Every time it rained, it turned into a huge mudhole. Not to mention all the pig crap mixed in, which my 7 yr old daughter, Ana, thought would be a great idea to roll in! And the smell, woooo!

After about 2 months in the muddy pigsty, we built one on the far side of our barn-with a wooden floor. This made the pigs very happy. Believe it or not, they don’t really like to stay dirty. They use one corner to crap in & that makes it easier for Cristian to scoop it all out. The eat like absolute hogs though! One even went so far as to lay in the feed trough & got his tail eaten off by a sow. We now call him Stumpy.

On hot days, you can usually walk out there & find at least one of them all the way in the water trough cooling off. I told Will we need to get them a swimming pool. Maybe next we can get them some bathing suits & lawn chairs!
