Duck, duck, No Goose!!!
We recently added mallard ducklings to our ever-growing farm. The first 6 we got a couple of days before my birthday. We were in TSC (http://www.tractorsupply.com), just shopping for some feed, dog food and other fun stuff when I noticed them. I told my husband they could be an early birthday present for me, so he got them, what a pushover! Last week he went back & purchased 12 more. Unfortunately 3 of them died. We still have 15 though!
I had never had duck meat until a few years ago. growing up, I never would have even tried it. After trying it though, I really do loveit! If you have ever bought duck from a grocery store, you may have noticed how expensive it is & for such a small amount. Hence the reason we are raising them. I would like to keep a couple for pets & raise the rest for meat.
We rented a backhoe & dug a pond out next to the pig pen for them. We plan to build them an enclosure here also. Right now they are staying in the house in a kennel and a box. They will probably stay in here for another month or so before we move them to their new home & see how they fare. Honestly, it will be nice to get them out of the house. I really don’t enjoy changing their litter, ick!
