In the doghouse

By Jaime Cross

When we first moved to Kentucky, the only pet we had was Buster-my boston terrier. He was a stubborn lil guy who refused to be housebroken. About a month after we moved here, Will, Audrey & I were out with the younger kids & we ended up in a pet shop up in Elizebethtown. Although Audrey & I wanted a potbelly pig, we ended up leaving with Mickey. He is a beagle/australian shepherd mix. He was so cute we just couldn’t leave him there.  He & Buster became great friends.

In July of last year, Buster got killed by a car. He liked to bite the tires as they went by & unfortunately got a lil too close. I cried my eyes out. He was a pain, peed on everything but I loved the lil guy. Mickey was missing him too. My son Cristian asked me a month or so later could he bring home a stray from Sunset Harbor, a subdivision just down the road. I agreed & that is how we ended up with Jack, a hound mix. He is a good bird dog as it turns out. Whenever our chickens get out, we just set him loose & he catches them. Not too long afterwards, our friend James brang us Brownie, an overweight lil hound. We built them a pen outside, which they have escaped from numerous times. Brownie has even lost weight from all the exercise.

My Mom passed away in August & left my sisters & brother & me a bit of money, so I purchased Sookie. She is a Yorkie & she stays in the house. I do let her roam the yard with me & she likes to think she is a herd dog. She goes into the goat pen with me & tries to chase the goats. She even tried chasing a chicken when it got out, until it turned around & chased her back. Now I want to get another Yorkie so she can have a dog her size to run around with, just have to sucker the husband into it!
