Gardening for….Absolute Idiots?
When we moved here in December of 2007, I had an idea of what we wanted to do. I just had no idea what I was getting myself into. I guess it was around February I opened my big mouth & said, “You know, I would like to plant a garden!”. I never got around to it last year, I was heavy with child number 7 & just had no energy or motivation to get out there & do it.
Unfortunately, my husband didn’t forget my slip of the tongue. This year, I am going to plant a garden. A big garden, a HUGE garden. And I have absolutely no idea what I am doing! I went out & got some seeds, cabbage plants, onions, potatoes. A neighbor came by with his tractor & plowed up where I want it. And I still haven’t started planting. I hope to start that part tomorrow.
Growing up my Me-ma had a garden. I wish I had paid more attention. My Mom never had a green thumb, matter of fact, I think she killed a plastic plant once. My Dad planted strawberries when I was growing up & by the time I married the first time, he had preogressed to watermelons & cantaloupes, but nothing like I am planning! I’ll let you know how it goes!

It is a good thing that several of our neighbors have been over helping you then
The first garden is the scariest. I’ve only been gardening a few years, and I’ve learned that each garden has it’s new experiences. I’m origionally from the South, and learning to garden in the New England mountains requires a new approach to anything I’ve ever done. Because the growing season here is so short, (and the fact that I am usually so impatient for spring), I have to start most of my plants indoors. The official date for planting outdoors is Memorial Day. By then the chances of a freeze are slim, (but not impossible). There are several good sites with tips & tricks around the net that I have used a lot. Email me if you want to compare notes.
I love your site! Even though my kiddos are grown, it’s fun to relive the adventures, and mis-adventures, of raising little ones.
May the Lord bless you.
