Leaving the City
When I first told my Mom that I was moving to Kentucky to live on a farm, she thought I was crazy. After we had lived here for 2 months, we started adding animals. We started off small, a dog & some cats. She still said I was crazy. My Mom liked to start off her you’re crazy speech with “Just what you need…..” another animal, more bills, more kids! I wish she was around today, she would definitely think I was nuts.
If you have a large family like us, a farm is an ideal place to raise your family. We lived in the city for a long time & all that amounts to is wasted rent money & small properties. Out here, our children have room to run, more “pets” than I would have ever cared to let them have in the city & they are learning to live off the land.
I say it is starting to look like a real farm because we now have dogs, cats, 6 pigs, 4 goats, 130 chickens, 11 ducks & are hopefully adding ponies and a cow soon. We also have turkeys coming soon & I want to get rabbits. In the city, we were lucky to have even a dog.
We live in the middle of nowhere & I prefer it that way. I grew up in a rural area & I was glad to get to the city, but now this place feels more like home. It is more rural than where I grew up, but it is preferable. The neighbors are like family, my kids can run free on our property without having to worry if they are making too much noise, etc, like they did in the city. If you are considering buying a farm or moving to a rural area, I say go for it! You’ll be glad you did
