City Life vs Country Life
I grew up on the Eastern Shore of Virginia (the ESVA or the Shore to us natives), a rural area. I always said things like “I can’t wait to get away from here”, “Gosh this has to be the most boring place on Earth” growing up. I mean, you had to drive to another state to get to the nearest Walmart. If you wanted to go to a mall you had to drive to another state one way or an hour the other. Nonetheless, I married a guy from the rival high school when I was 20 & had 2 kids.
My marriage went belly up by the time I was 23 & I visited Florida (South Miami Beach to be exact) for the very first time. I was awestruck! Stores, restaurants, and by gosh-a mall! I met William there & moved in 2 weeks later. That was in March 2000. We lived around Florida off and on for the next 7 years. I have to say, city life agreed with me. Taxis, shopping, things to do. With all the fun came all the not so fun stuff. Outrageously high bills (rent, utilities), violence, bad attitude kids at the schools.
That is when we decided to find a farm. Or at least a piece of land in the country. We had considered moving back to my hometown a few years back, but it fell through. Instead, we found our piece of heaven in the hills of Kentucky. The price was good and it was a rural area, much more rural than where I grew up. I have found out that although city life agreed with me, country life does so even more. I really love it out here. I even know a few poeple who are actually envious of me! What’s more, the mall is an hour & a half away & I don’t really miss it. Ok, well maybe sometimes-I do like to shop. And I do like to eat at a restaurant now & then. I do miss pizza delivery, too. Otherwise, I like it just fine. It is nice to step outside & hear the birds singing. It is a great feeling to look around you & say “All this is mine!”, to grow your own food, raise your own meat & collect your own eggs. Or to look to your left or right & not have a neighbors house sitting almost right next to you. And you can actually count on your neighbors too. If you get the chance to move to the country, I would highly recommend it.
