Around the Farm

By Jaime Cross

It has been too hot to do anything in the midday hours here lately. We have been waiting until 5-6 PM to go back to the garden to get weeding done. It was really nice this evening, as it was breezy. A storm is approaching. We took all the kids out back today & some of the older ones helped weed. Ana complained at first, but then she didn’t want to go back up to the house. Kids!

Growing up in a rural part of Virginia, I never thought I would end up back in a place almost like where I started. I left the Eastern Shore of Virginia when I was almost 24 for the bright lights of Miami Beach. We lived around Florida for 7 years after I moved there: Miami Beach, Hollywood, Kissimmee, Poinciana, Melbourne. I miss it sometimes, but the country life suits me best.

Everyone here is pretty laid back & if you need help, all you have to do is call a neighbor. We have made some pretty good friends since moving here & lost one as well. I do miss the Shore & family & I don’t get back to visit as often as I should.

Another project we want to start as soon as we can is edible landscaping for the front yard. There is so much I want to do, but with the economy the way it is it’s hard to get all that I want done, done. Some future projects I would like include: edible landscaping, a gazebo, a pergola, grape arbor, flower garden. It goes on & on. So if you have some time on your hands, come on out & give me a hand!
