Processing Shed
A couple of weeks ago I mentioned to Will that a processing shed would be nice. No more chicken guts in the kitchen sink namely
He thought it was a good idea as well. We had planned to use the flooring from our old hog pen, located in front of our turkey coop. After some debate, we decided to tear down the kids playhouse that was on stilts & attached to our barn.
Will & Bobby, our farmhand, had the playhouse broken down in 2 days. Cristian helped too, let me add that in there before he sees this & complains. The wood got sorted, then they started building. First, we decided where it would be built. The ideal location was in front of our hog pen. We have 2 trees there with a board bolted into them & a hoist attached. This is where we bleed the hogs out after, not to be graphic, shooting them & slitting their throats. Next, the floor was laid out, nailed together & squared. After squaring the floor, the rest of the floor planks were nailed down. The wall frames were then put up & notched out for crossbeams. After that was done, we nailed up planks for the walling, then started on the roof. After which, we painted the shed & shingled the roof. Ok, Bobby did most of that.
The idea is to put in a rail system at one end, where the double doors are located. After the hog is bled out, we can open the doors & push the hog onto the rail & into the building for gutting & transfer to a table to make the meat cuts. The building we also hold a scalder & our plucker for the chickens. There will also be a gutting table for the chickens, so now my kitchen will not be used for this anymore. Yay!
